US Intelligence Chief: Risk of Terror Attack Lower Now Than in 2001
The United States' top intelligence official says the risk of another terrorist attack against this country is lower than it was five years ago, but he admits the war in Iraq is producing "a new generation of terrorist leaders." John Negroponte, who supervises all U.S. intelligence agencies, was speaking late Monday in Washington about published excerpts of a secret National Intelligence Estimate on Trends in Global Terrorism. Negroponte said "The Iraq jihad is shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives." But he added that if the effort to suppress insurgents in Iraq is ultimately successful, "fewer fighters will be inspired to carry on the fight."
