China Agrees to Release Bird Flu Samples to WHO
The World Health Organization says China has agreed to share virus
samples from poultry infected with bird flu -- samples that could help in
formulating vaccines. WHO officials say a deal was reached after several requests
for the samples.
In other developments, Israeli officials say initial tests show the
deadly H5N1 strain of the virus has spread to the Gaza Strip. More tests are
being carried out. And in Afghanistan, officials have begun culling poultry in
an effort to contain an outbreak of the disease. Officials in Africa
wrapped up a conference Wednesday on coordinating the continent's efforts to
stop the spread of H5N1. But delegates failed to discuss measures to prevent
human infections.
Since 2003, 103 people have died of bird flu.
China Warns: U.S. Troops Based in South Korea Only for South Korea Defence
China's ambassador to South Korea Ning Fukui has warned the United
States against using troops based in South Korea for purposes other than
defending the country. Ambassador Ning Fukui told a security forum in Seoul
Wednesday that China accepts the U.S. military presence in South Korea if the
forces act within a bilateral framework. But he said Beijing cannot turn a
blind eye if American troops act against a third party.
The Chinese ambassador was commenting on a strategic flexibility
agreement reached between the United States and South Korea in January. The pact
allows U.S. troops in South Korea to deploy outside the country. One of
Beijing's concerns would be of U.S. troops participating in any defense of Taiwan.
The U.S. maintains 32-thousand-500 troops in South Korea, but plans to
reduce that number by eight-thousand in the coming years.
