Rights Group: Chinese Police Tortured Tibetan Detainees
A human rights group says Chinese police tortured and interrogated a group of Tibetans who were detained last year while trying to flee to Nepal. The International Campaign for Tibet says at least 25 Tibetans, including 10 children, were taken into Chinese custody September 30th on the Tibet-Nepal border.
The group says one of the detainees reported the party was taken to a detention center near the Nepalese border, where teenagers and adults were beaten with rubber batons and electric-shock prods. It also says Chinese police held some of the children for three months and only released them after their caretakers paid a fine.
China has not responded to the allegations. Refugee groups have accused Chinese forces of shooting dead two of the Tibetans as they crossed Mount Cho Oyu, on the China-Nepal border. Chinese officials say their troops shot in self-defense.
