Germany Issues Arrest Warrants for 13 Involved in CIA Kidnapping of Citizen
German prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for 13 people in connection with the kidnapping of a German citizen by the CIA. Khaled el-Masri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, says the CIA abducted him in December 2003 in Macedonia and flew him to a detention center in Afghanistan. El-Masri says he was shackled, beaten, kept in solitary confinement and injected with drugs there, before his release in Albania five months later.
Spanish police, who had also been investigating the case, provided the names of the U.S. agents to prosecutors in the German city of Munich. The police say they believe several "CIA-rendition" operations started from an airport on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Some of the CIA employees named in the arrest warrant reportedly live in the U.S. state of North Carolina, but U.S. authorities have refused to cooperate with German investigators.
