U.S. Vice President Targeted in Suicide Blast; Cheney Unhurt
Taleban militants in Afghanistan say they were targeting U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney when a suicide bomber struck the U.S. military base at Bagram Tuesday. Cheney was not hurt in the blast, which killed at least 12 people, including one U.S. and one South Korean soldier.
Military officials say 27 people, mostly Afghans, were wounded in the attack. Taleban militants claimed responsibility for the blast.
Cheney was staying at the base after his Monday meeting in Kabul with Afghan President Hamid Karzai was postponed due to bad weather. After the explosion, Cheney said he was briefly moved to a bomb shelter. About two hours later, he made the 60-kilometer trip to Kabul to meet with Mr. Karzai.
