Chen Shui-bian Will Not Stop in US on Return from Latin America to Taiwan
Taiwan officials say President Chen Shui-bian will not make a transit
stop in the United States as he returns home from a tour of Latin America.
Chen Shuibian flies back to Taiwan Tuesday from Costa Rica, where he
attended the inauguration of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias on Monday.
At the ceremony, President Chen Shui-bian met briefly with U.S. First
Lady Laura Bush, who was among the visiting dignitaries. Taiwan's Central
News Agency says the two had a short conversation, during which
Chen Shui-bian invited Mrs. Bush to visit Taiwan.
Prior to visiting Costa Rica, President Chen Shui-bian traveled to
Paraguay. The two countries are among Taiwan's few diplomatic allies
in the region.
Abe: Japan, China Agree to Discuss Gas Dispute
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe says Japan and China have
agreed to discuss a dispute over the development of gas fields in the
East China Sea. He did not offer specifics Tuesday about a fifth round
of discussions aimed at determining which country has drilling rights
to an area rich in oil and gas reserves near Okinawa.
The Associated Press says the talks will take place next week, most
likely in Tokyo. The conflict over gas reserves is one of many disputes
that have tested the strength of ties between China and Japan. The
countries are also arguing over Japan's wartime aggression and other
territorial issues.
Tokyo has proposed that the Chinese and Japanese foreign ministers
meet later this month to try to improve the countries' strained relations.
