Ukraine's President Meets Prime Minister as Political Crisis Continues
Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has again told the country's prime minister the only way out of the nation's political crisis is to hold new parliamentary elections. The Ukrainian president made his comments during talks in Kiev with Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
Meanwhile, thousands of Yanukovych supporters demonstrated in the city's Independence Square protesting the president's dissolution of parliament and call for May elections.
Ukraine's Constitutional Court is to open hearings Wednesday on the legality of Mr. Yushchenko's order, which the prime minister's supporters have rejected. Five of the court's 18 judges have complained of pressure against them and urged authorities to provide them with additional security.
The European Union, Russia, and the United States have all voiced concern over the stand-off, without explicitly taking sides for or against the pro-reform Mr. Yushchenko or Mr. Yanukovych, who supports closer ties with Russia.
