Indian authorities say Maoist rebels have stormed a police outpost in the central state of Chhattisgarh, killing at least 50 security personnel and injuring 12 others.
Officials say the guerrillas fired guns and hurled gasoline bombs and hand grenades at the remote police post before dawn Thursday. They fled after stealing weapons and planting landmines around the post.
Victims include local tribespeople recruited to help anti-rebel operations in the dense jungle area.
The chief minister of Chhattisgarh state said police are searching the forest for the rebels. He said initial reports indicate more than 200 rebels were involved.
Authorities say the attack is one of the worst carried out by the Maoist group in recent years.
