China Says Makers of Antibiotic to Blame for Six Deaths
Investigators in China say manufacturing errors led to six deaths blamed on use of a Chinese-made antibiotic. The state-run China Daily quotes the State Food and Drug Administration as saying the Anhui Huayuan Worldbest Biology Pharmacy Company failed to use proper sterilization procedure in manufacturing the drug (Xinfu) . It says the agency will punish the company for its production failure, but adds no further details.
The government ordered a recall of more than a million bottles of the drug after the first death was reported in late July. Since then, five other people who took the drug have died, and 80 have fallen ill in provinces including Zhejiang, Heilongjiang, Hunan and Shandong.
