Iraqi Police Recover more than 70 Bodies
Iraqi police say they have recovered more than 70 bodies in and around Baghdad
over the past day, in an apparent surge of sectarian reprisal attacks.
In one instance, 15 corpses were found crammed into an abandoned truck in
western Baghdad. Police say the victims appeared to have been strangled. The
latest bloodshed -- the second wave of mass killings in the past three weeks --
followed a string of bombings Sunday that killed about 50 people and
wounded more than 200 others in a Shi'ite section of Baghdad.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry has banned driving in Baghdad, ahead of the
opening session of parliament later this week. Political leaders opened
meetings Tuesday aimed at reaching agreement on who will head a new
Cabinet.
Sunni Arabs and Kurds are opposing a new term for interim Prime
Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who is a Shi'ite.

Israel Demands Custody of Palestinian Prisoners in West Bank
Israeli forces have stormed a Palestinian jail in the West Bank to
demand custody of several inmates, including the Popular Front for the
Liberation of Palestine (P.F.L.P.) militant who ordered the assassination of
Israel's tourism minister five years ago. Witnesses in Jericho say gunshots and
explosions have been heard. They say at least one Palestinian guard has
been killed.
American and British monitors who supervise operations by Palestinian
jailers, withdrew before Israeli forces stormed the prison compound today
Tuesday,citing security reasons. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
has condemned the raid and said he is holding the British and U.S
monitors responsible for Israel's assault.
The man at the center of the incident, Ahmed Saadat, is a leader of
P.F.L.P., which claimed responsibility for killing the Israeli Cabinet minister
in 2001.
Israel's interim security minister says moves to seize custody of Saadat
and other militants at the jail began after the Palestinian Authority
said it was prepared to release the men.
