U.S. Says It Shares Many Global Goals With China
A senior U.S. official says the United States and China have discussed ways of working together on such issues as Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea.
Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick said after two days of discussions in Washington with China's vice foreign minister, Dai Bingguo, the countries can pursue the same policy goals without always pursuing the same policies.
Mr. Zoellick said in a statement Thursday he and Mr. Dai discussed overlapping interests -- including fighting terrorism, preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and reducing the risks of pandemic disease.

Reports: Security Officers in Southern China Surround Village After Protest Clash
Reports from southern China's Guangdong province say armed police have sealed off a village after opening fire on a group of protesters and killing at least two people this week.
Witnesses say police fired into a crowd late Tuesday in Dongzhou village, where at least one-thousand people were protesting inadequate compensation for land taken for the construction of a power plant.
Local residents are quoted (by Reuters and the French News agency) as saying Chinese authorities have surrounded the village and are not allowing them to leave.
The deputy Asia Director for Amnesty International (Catherine Baber) has described the reports from Guangdong as "chilling," and called for an immediate independent investigation.
The Chinese government has not commented on the matter.
来自中国华南广东省的报导说，星期一武*警在一个村子对抗*议民众开*枪并打*死至少两人之后把村子封_锁了起来。
目击者说，警*察星期二晚些时候对东_洲村的一群人开火，当时至少有一千人在场抗议政_府建发电厂征地补贴不够。

这次汕*尾东-洲镇抗议事件酿成的暴力镇#压主要是源于土地争议和补偿费。去年，当_局在东^洲镇兴建风力发电厂，占据了当地的大量土地，断绝了村民赖以生存的渔业资源。据当地村民反映，他们没有得到什么补偿，上边下拨的补偿费被层层贪_官中饱私囊。
为此，村民从今年5月开始向有关部门反映，希望上边能解决他们的问题。9月21号，村民开始封锁电厂道路的维权行动。12月5号，广东汕*尾当_局派遣上百名防暴警*察进驻遮浪风力发电厂，并拘捕了村民代表，由此引发了数以千计村民参加的抗议。警*察不仅向村民投掷催泪弹，还实枪荷弹地射杀抗议村民。有报导说，村民用炸鱼的爆炸装置反击。
中国连年经济高速发展，对电力等能源需求剧增。农民土地被征用，得不到应有补偿的事情经常发生。中国公安_部估计，2004年发生了7万4千起民众暴力冲*突事件，参与的人多达370多万。
