Toxicologist Says Milosevic Took Wrong Medicine

A Dutch toxicologist says late Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic took
a powerful antibiotic that neutralized his medication for a heart cond
ition and high blood pressure.

Groningen University toxicology expert Donald Uges said today (Monday)
a blood sample taken before the former Yugoslav president died shows
traces of a drug (rifampicin) used to treat leprosy and tuberculosis -
conditions Milosevic did not have. Uges says the drug would have coun
tered the effects of Milosevic's other medicines.

It is not clear how Milosevic got the prescription antibiotic.
Uges says he was asked to examine Milosevic's blood sample after his
high blood pressure did not respond to medication prescribed by his Dutch doctors.
Preliminary autopsy results show the 64-year-old Milosevic died of a heart attack.
Post-mortem toxicology tests findings are still pending.
Milosevic died Saturday in his cell at the U.N. war crimes tribunal
detention center at The Hague where he was standing trial.

President Bush Speaks on Iraq and War on Terrorism Today

President Bush is due to give a speech today (Monday) on the war on
terrorism - the first in a series marking the three-year anniversary of
the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Mr. Bush is scheduled to deliver remarks today to the Foundation for D
efense of Democracies at George Washington University in Washington.
The president's speeches are part of a campaign to assure Americans the
administration has a strategy for success in Iraq.

Recent public opinion polls show nearly four of five Americans, including

President Bush says he is optimistic about Iraq, and believes Iraqi leaders
recognize that sectarian violence in the country will undermine
their ability to self-govern.
