Chinese state media say a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China has killed 24 miners, just one day after two other mining accidents killed 53. The Xinhua news agency says the latest mine blast happened Sunday evening in the city of Linfen in Shanxi province.
Investigators say gas accumulated during a power outage that shut down the mine's ventilation system. All 24 miners underground at the time of the blast were killed. Their bodies have been recovered. Chinese police have detained the mine's owner, but the general manager is still at large.
